Kilan was born on the 5th May 2017 and is an Alaskan Malamute. We were de- lighted when Kilan came to live with us on June 11th 2017. He is a really special dog, in short a real Alaskan Malamute. Playful and cuddly, and he thoroughly enjoys when new guests come to the Lodge. He is in his element in snow and water, and he loves to lie in snow even when it’s minus 30 degrees or colder outside. He al- ways wants to be involved. Our guests love it, when Kilan, like his predecessor the wolf, howls over the lake in the evening. He became a father to 9 pups for the first time on the 14th October 2018.

Lura was born on October 20th 2017 and has enriched our Lodge since the 26th February 2018. She is an Akbash / Maremmano mix, a proper livestock guard dog. She is very vigilant and protects us and our guests from bears, wolves and other predators. One feels safe with Lura on their side. Nonetheless she is playful and loves to romp around with Kilan. On October 14th 2018 she became the proud mother to 9 wonderful pups.

Abia is our female Maine-Coon cat. She was born on June 3rd 2012 and emigrated with us to Canada. Our snow white lady loves to lie outside on the terrace on sunny days and observe everything going on around her. Since Abia has been in the house, the mice have had no peace. She loves to cuddle with guests.
Sinux is our sensitive one, even though he’s a large cat. He was born on April 23rd 2005 and also came with us from Switzerland to Canada. Sinux takes a bit longer till he feels comfortable with new people. Many of our guests only see him from afar, or at a reasonable distance lying on the terrace.
Nera, like her brother Sinux, was born on April 23rd 2005 and is our small black cat. Needless to say, he also came with us to Canada. Nera is mischievous and would preferably spend all her time eat - ing or sleeping. She likes to be comfort - able and loves lying somewhere warm.

Xian, a blue jay, is our pet bird, so to speak. Nearly every morning before dawn Xian waits in front of the Lodge for nuts, and if we are late he likes to knock on our bedroom window to inform us that it’s high time we got up. Many times, when Chantal is cooking, he sits in front of the kitchen window telling stories, simply so that cooking won’t be boring. Xian has been visiting us practically daily for many years now, and as might be expected, has become a part of our family.

We were able to witness how Whiskey was born on October 14th 2018 as one of nine puppies of Lura. It was a very special experience and it deeply influenced us. So we decided that one of the puppies should complement our team. We opted for our little sunshine Whiskey. Whiskey likes to romp around and slowly develop her own personality. She may al- ready be very stubborn if she does not want something. She loves to walk beside her father or mother because she feels safe and protected. Whiskey will quickly conquer the hearts of our guests with their charm.

April 2019 With us now spring has arrived. The snowmelt is in full swing. Nature is slowly awakening again and our feathered friends are slowly returning from the south to Tchentlo Lake.

April 2019

The Airline Creek in front of our house is already ice-free. Preparations for the coming season are in full swing.April 2019

April 2019

April 2018 Incredibly this winter it just doesn’t want to stop snowing. There hasn’t been such a cold winter with so much snow for more than 35 years. We are slowly having enough of it. It snowed daily until the 26th of April, but now suddenly everything is changing quickly and it’s beginning to melt.

The lake is already open in certain areas, and suddenly overnight in the middle of May it was free of ice. Unfortunately, it appears that this year is not a good year for the morel mushroom. Too much snow and afterwards too dry. Nonetheless, we were able to find some morels with our first guests at the end of May.April 2018

April 2018In comparison to January, it’s not so cold anymore, though the temperatures are staying between minus 10 to minus 15 degrees during the day, still sinking regularly to less than minus 20 degrees at night. There is an incredible amount of snow, it’s still snowing and it seems as if this is not going to be the last snow we get. Everything is covered with layers of meter high snow. The days are getting longer again and we are enjoying the beautiful days when we see the sun. April 2018At the end of February Lura (a 4 month old livestock guard dog) came to live with us. Kilan is of course delighted with his new friend. In the early mornings we enjoy snow shoe walking with our dogs on the untouched lake and through the snowy forests. The snow conditions are perfect for snow mobile tours, there is a hardly a place that you can’t reach with the snow mobiles. Simply awesome and unforgettable. We have also built our first snowman, or better said – „Sid“.

April 2018It is now already the end of January 2018 and we are currently experiencing our first proper winter in the Lodge. Summer and Fall 2017 gave us beautifully warm weather and life mainly revolved around the outdoors. Nature had so much to offer. In May we were able to collect a great amount of morel mushrooms, and in Fall wild raspberries, which we were able to pick right beside the Lodge. Also, we were able to catch great fish until late into Fall. Our guests were delighted that, besides the trolling on the predatory chars, trotlining for whitefish was also very successful. In this way we spent many evenings fishing out on the lake, and thus enjoyed the mild balmy Summer and Fall.April 20182017 was an unbelievable year for bears. Never before could we observe so many black bears as this year. A few times we even saw the less commonly seen brown bears. One thing that really pleased us was that our blue jay „Xian“ came back to the Lodge in 2017 with a new female on his side. The breeding was successful, and produced up to 6 young blue jays. As is normal with many animal parents, the young were dispersed sometime later. Our two blue jays „Xian“ and „Maddy“ greet us nearly every morning despite snow and cold temperatures. Sometimes they even accompany us for a while on our walks with Kilan. Kilan is our Alaskan Malamute who has belonged to our family since the 12th July 2017. He came to us as a 12 week old puppy, and since his arrival has enriched our life at the Lodge. Autumn 2017 has been a defining time for Rogers Paradise Lodge. There has been a lot of building going on and nearly all construction has been completed. Now the new buildings and constructions are just waiting for a protective coat of paint, which, because of so much snow, had to be postponed until spring time.

April 2018In November the first snowfall came. We were delighted to see it because it entirely changes the landscape in a most beautiful way. Soon everything was covered with a lovely layer of white. Towards the end of December the Tchentlo Lake was frozen over and we could go on our first walks and snow mobile tours over it. Our first winter here had many hidden surprises for us. We chose a rather severe and unusually cold winter as our first winter. The temperatures sank for a long time to under minus 30 degrees, and sometimes even to minus 40 degrees. This was really a test for us. As a result some of our water pipes froze, including the sewage pipes.April 2018In the meantime, we have found a solution to this problem and the icy temperatures can’t harm our water pipes anymore. When the sun shines on our new sheltered terrace, there is nothing nicer than to sit there with a warm drink and take in the beautiful, almost magical scenery. We can often hear a pack of wolves howling over the lake. We’ve also seen some wolves at close range. One time, when Roger was using his snowmobile on the lake he was able to drive alongside a black wolf for a good period of time, the wolf was just one meter away from him. That was a wonderful experience for Roger.

Since the 23rd April 2017 we have been back at our Lodge. At the beginning we had to fight our way through meter high layers of snow to reach the Lodge. Since we were opening the Lodge in the middle of winter, the cold temperatures prevented us from getting our water system running. There was no alternative but to boil water from the snow. However, after one week we were able to end this adventure and get our water system running again. Meanwhile, the Spring has arrived and the flowers are blooming with their wonderful colors. With the lovely warm weather animals also started to appear. A diverse range of animals visited us around the Lodge.April 2018 This year promised to become a great bear year, so many black bears as this year has hardly ever been seen. On one trip out we spotted 17 black bears, many of them mothers with their young from last year. In May we saw Elk in front of the Lodge nearly everyday. Due to the increasingly warm days they didn’t stay around too long, and kept their visits to the cooler early morning hours. However, their fresh tracks are still to be seen daily. Sometime ago, as we drove out to get wood for the winter, we saw a wolverine which was enjoying filling his stomach with the remains of a carcass. However, he wasn’t so impressed that we appeared, and he reluctantly gave up on his prey. We have put some of our boats into the water already, and have been lucky enough to catch and cook a few wonderfully tasty Canadian trout (Char). Thanks to tips given by Roger, our guests were also very successful and in Tchentlo lake were able to catch Canadian lake trout with lengths up to 95cms. After some time going back and forth our container with our removal boxes has now arrived, was delivered to the Lodge, and is just waiting to be unpacked. Also, our Pinzgauer arrived unscathed, and soon we’ll make the first expeditions with our „Pinzi“.

In 1990 he changed career from the bakery to becoming a policeman in Zuerich, where he has successfully worked for more than 25 years. In 2011 Roger took part in a televised three week survival course which renewed his passion to be a part of nature and the outdoors. This experience influenced his decision to realize his dream and move to Canada with his wife Chantal, to open their own Lodge in the Wilderness. At a young age Roger learned fly fishing from his father and passed a lot of time trying it out on different rivers and lakes. When he was a young adult he bought his own boat and enjoyed spending time angling and trawling for fish. The fascination with fishing inspired him to manufacture his own fishing lures made from seashells. This led him to set up his own firm, Perlmutter.ch, selling self-made lures. Guests at Roger’ Paradise Lodge can benefit from Roger‘s knowledge of fishing, and the best lures to use. Also, with his experience of the outdoors he will always be available to offer help and advice.
